Generative AI for Genomic Data Sharing

Develops guidance on the responsible use of generative AI in large-scale genomic databases

Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to transform the way researchers search for, access, and analyse genomic and related health data. Conversational AI, a technology that enables machines to understand, process and respond to human language naturally, is a particularly promising tool for accessing and querying large datasets. Conversational AI can take the form of chatbots or virtual assistants that can perform tasks or provide information based on voice or text inputs. When using any new technology, it is important to take into account attribution, privacy, and accountability, and to minimise bias and potential harm. The Generative AI for Genomic Data Sharing group, formed by the Regulatory & Ethics Work Stream,  will develop guidance for the responsible use of conversational AI in large-scale open-access genomic databases.

Benefits

  • Helpful for developers and users of generative AI tools that analyse genomic databases, as well as researchers, clinical decision-makers, and potentially patient communities
  • These guidance points may be useful more broadly, as governments and policymakers grapple with how to regulate the responsible and trustworthy use of generative AI in society

Target users

Researchers, clinicians, clinical laboratories, data generators, data custodians, data access committees, ethics review committees, data protection authorities, funding agencies, developers, research participants & patient communities, public, security officers, and research institutes
